The short answer

A pergola is an open outdoor structure of posts and overhead beams that shades a patio, pool deck or dining area. CoastLife Pools builds and installs pergolas in a range of sizes and styles, including models from The Luxury Pergola, as part of our outdoor living work across the Treasure Coast, planned with the pool, patio and lighting so it all fits together.

Why a Pergola Earns Its Place

A Treasure Coast backyard gets used most in the hours when the sun lets you. A pergola stretches those hours: it puts shade over the table at lunch, the lounge chairs in the afternoon, and the grill at dinner, and it gives the yard a room you can furnish.

It also does design work. A pergola frames the view back to the pool, gives lighting and fans somewhere to live, and turns a flat paver field into distinct spaces for cooking, eating and lounging.

Where Pergolas Work Best

Over Outdoor Dining
Shade for the table closest to the kitchen and the house, the most-used spot in most yards.
Beside the Pool
A shaded lounge zone within reach of the water, without covering the pool itself.
Over an Outdoor Kitchen
Covers the cook and frames the kitchen, with room for lighting and fans.
Attached to the House
Extends a covered lanai or back door into the yard.
Freestanding in the Yard
Creates a destination away from the house, often paired with a fire feature.
Over a Spa
Shade and a sense of enclosure for a spa, without closing it in.

Pergola, Patio Roof or Screen Enclosure?

Three ways to cover part of a backyard, and they solve different problems. We build all three, so the advice is about the yard, not about selling one.

More on the other two: patio roofs are part of our patio work, and screen enclosures have their own page.

How a Pergola Project Runs

  1. Design visit. we look at the sun, the views, the pool and where you actually sit, then choose the model, size and placement.
  2. Permits and HOA. we confirm what your address requires and file the paperwork, including architectural review where your community has it.
  3. Footings and utilities. posts get proper footings, and wiring for lights or fans is run before the surface is finished.
  4. Build. the pergola is assembled and anchored, then lighting and accessories are installed.
  5. Walkthrough. we go over care and any controls, and make sure the finished space matches the plan.

Pergola Questions

What is a pergola?
A pergola is an outdoor structure of posts and overhead beams or slats that shades a patio, deck or seating area. It can stand alone or attach to the house, and it frames an outdoor room without enclosing it.
What pergola brands do you install?
We build and install pergolas in a range of sizes and styles, including models from The Luxury Pergola. We help you choose the model and size for the space during the design visit.
Do I need a permit for a pergola in Florida?
Often, yes, especially for attached or larger structures, and many communities also require HOA approval. We check the requirements for your address and handle the paperwork as part of the project.
Will a pergola hold up to Florida storms?
A pergola built here has to be anchored and built for our wind, not just set on a patio. Materials, footings and attachment are chosen with that in mind, and your permit requirements reflect it.
What material is best for a pergola near a pool?
Near salt air, sun and pool splash, low-maintenance materials that will not rot, warp or need constant refinishing usually win. We walk through the options for your yard and style during design.
Can you add a pergola to my existing patio or deck?
Usually. We confirm the surface and what is underneath can support the posts and footings, then plan placement around the pool, the house and the sun.
Is it better to add a pergola with a new pool?
It is the cheapest moment: footings, electrical for fans or lights, and the paver layout are all planned once. A pergola also fits well with a patio or outdoor kitchen project.

We build and install pergolas across Stuart, Palm City, Jensen Beach, Hobe Sound, Sewall's Point, Port St. Lucie, Tradition, Jupiter and Palm Beach Gardens. We also take on select projects in other counties. If you are not sure we cover your area, just ask.
