A clean rectangular pool with a sun shelf off one long side and a square spa off the other, set flush in a wide light stone deck that runs from the covered patio out to the lawn.
What we built
- Rectangular pool with entry steps in two corners
- Sun shelf with two in-pool loungers and a bubbler
- Square spa set level with the deck, spilling into the pool
- Stone pads bridging the spa and the pool
- Light stone paver deck and coping
The layout, from above
The pool is a plain rectangle, and the two extras are pushed outside it: the sun shelf steps out of one long side and the spa out of the other, directly opposite each other. That keeps the full rectangle open for swimming.
Entry steps fill the two corners on the house side, so there is a way in from either end of the patio.
One level from the patio to the lawn
Nothing here is raised. The pool, the spa and the deck all sit at the same level as the covered patio, so the whole yard reads as one floor with water cut into it.
The deck is wide enough on the lawn side for a row of chaise lounges and a dining table without crowding the pool edge.

Sun shelf off the side
The sun shelf is a shallow bay off the lawn side of the pool, with two in-pool loungers and a bubbler between them. Because it sits outside the rectangle, the loungers face straight back across the water to the house.
On the opposite side, wide steps in each corner double as places to sit in the water.

A spa level with the deck
The spa is square, with bench seating on two sides, and its coping is level with the deck around it. It is the closest water to the covered patio.
Where the spa meets the pool, stone pads bridge the gap and the spa water spills through the slots between them. Aqua tile lines the spa and runs along the waterline of the pool.

Light stone, edge to edge
The deck is laid in light stone pavers from the house wall to the lawn, and the same stone forms the coping, so there is no border or change of material at the water. It continues under the patio roof.
