A long, straight pool set in a lawn, with a glass tile spa built inside the pool, a sun shelf at one end, and a terracotta urn fountain at each of the four corners. A raised lounge terrace runs along one side, and a bougainvillea-covered pergola holds the dining table.
What we built
- Long rectangular pool with light stone coping
- Spa built inside the pool, faced in blue glass mosaic
- Sun shelf with two in-pool loungers
- Four terracotta urn fountains, one at each corner
- Pebble interior finish with blue tile step markers
The layout, from above
The pool is one long rectangle with lawn on both long sides instead of a deck. The spa and sun shelf sit together at one end, and an urn marks each corner.
The rest of the yard is arranged around that rectangle: a raised lounge terrace on the far side, a fire pit seating area between the pool and the house, and a pergola off the near end, all joined by stone paths and stepping pads.
A long pool in a lawn
Most pools sit in a wide deck. This one is edged with a single band of light stone coping, and the lawn runs right up to it on both sides, so the pool reads as a strip of water through the garden.
The length is uninterrupted from the spa to the far wall, with the entry steps tucked beside the spa at the shelf end.

A spa inside the pool
The spa is built inside the pool, level with the water around it, instead of raised beside it. Its walls and top are faced in blue glass mosaic, so it shows as a dark blue square in the lighter water.
Beside it, the sun shelf holds two in-pool loungers and a small table. The interior is a light pebble finish, with blue tile marking the edge of each step and bench.

Urn fountains at the corners
A large terracotta urn stands at each corner of the pool, and each one sends a single arc of water back into it. They are the only water feature in the yard, and the only thing standing above the coping line.
From the lawn at the sun shelf end, the two near urns frame the whole length of the pool.

The lounge terrace
Along one side, a stone terrace is raised above the lawn, with a row of chaise lounges facing the water. A strip of grass separates it from the coping, so the terrace is beside the pool without being a pool deck.

Pergola and dining
Off the end of the pool, a pergola on square columns shades a long dining table. Bougainvillea has grown over the top and down both sides, and string lights hang under the beams.
